This course was the very first trichology course offered in the USA and is the only trichology course in the world developed at a university (the University of Southern California). The course is continually updated. As a non-profit corporation, the aim of the International Association of Trichologists is to educate.
Course Curriculum
The written material has been divided into thirteen main sections (modules). Students also receive 19 video lectures on the main topics. All the materials are digital.
Module 1 – Trichology and the Trichology Program
Introduces you to the course and what trichology involves.
Module 2 – Body Systems
The first instructional building block is in Body Systems. The emphasis is on parts, location, functions and relationships to hair and scalp for each of the major systems. Those which have a particularly close relationship are the circulatory, nervous, endocrine and immune systems.
Module 3 – Chemistry
The chemistry module begins with the basics of matter and energy, and builds through atoms, ions bonds and molecules. Cystine, cysteine and cysteic acid are discussed in detail a well as the relevance of pH to hair, and the different bonds in the hair.
Module 4 – Hair and Scalp
The chemistry and physiology of the hair and scalp are examined in great detail. This unit begins with the skin, its structures and functions, and extends outward to the hair, which is an appendage of the skin. After discussing the hair and skin, the module proceeds into the area of other vital support systems such as glands, circulation and nerves. The processes of keratinisation and pigmentation are explained.
Module 5 – Information Updates
Trichological articles that have previously been published in the IAT’s “Information Updates” are collected in this module.
Module 6 – Microscopy
A trichologist will use a variety of methods to help diagnose hair and scalp problems. One of the most important of these is the use of the microscope and trichoscope. This module explains the theories of light and magnification and the benefits of using a simple or compound microscope.
Module 7 – Nutrition
Hair and scalp problems often relate to nutritional problems. It is therefore essential to have a comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of nutrition and you will be asked to undertake some of your own research in answering some of the questions for this module. The nutritional requirements of the body are covered in detail and the consequences of nutritional imbalances on our health are discussed.
Module 8 – The Consultation / Hair Shaft Problems
This module discusses the consultation including identification and classification of physical signs, collection of pertinent details on family background, and personal history. This information is then organised into the individual profile.
Hair shaft problems include congenital and acquired abnormalities Problems of hair colour are also discussed.
Module 9 – Hair Loss
Loss of hair is the main problem that trichologists see. Many of these problems can be helped, some correct themselves, and other have no known solution. The various types of alopecia (hair loss) are dealt with in this module; their causes and treatment and how you recognise them. Disorders are classified according to their distribution on the scalp and the extent of the hair loss.
Module 10 – Scalp Problems
The conditions specifically affecting the scalp are discussed. Major categories include those problems characterised primarily by itching or scaling, excessive oiliness, and glandular disorders. Eruptions and inflammatory conditions of the scalp are covered as well as bacterial and fungal infections.
Module 11 – Trichological Preparations
Some of the products used to treat scalp problems are discussed so that the trichologist has some knowledge of the ingredients used in trichological preparations.
This module also has sections on shampoos, amino acids, steroids and oral contraceptives and their effects on the hair and hair loss.
Module 12 – Electrotherapy
This module concentrates on ultra-violet therapy, infra-red and laser therapy.
Module 13 – Organisation and Operation of the Trichology Clinic
This module provides guidelines for setting up a trichology clinic and maintaining its services. Also included are suggestions relating to ethics, standards and professional relationships.

TESTIMONIALS
Hear from our previous students
Switching from Law to Trichology was not much of a problem as the modules and recommended books made it easy for me to understand my new area of study. I also loved that the IAT allowed me to study at my own pace so I had a lot of time to read more and outside of what I was given.

I was really impressed with the modular study and the webinars, which made the modules much easier to understand.
During the clinical training, my trainer didn’t just teach me about the skills and the right way to conduct the consultation but also taught me the importance of telling the truth to patients, giving them the correct information, and being as positive as possible with the patient. I learned that passion and knowledge are critical.

After comparing several trichology programs, I determined that the International Association of Trichologists (IAT) program was right for me.
The curriculum was comprehensive, created for use in the salon industry, allowed me to complete my coursework at home and offered a clinical component. Certification as a trichologist has enabled me to identify problems early, tailor solutions to individuals and achieve improvements for my clients and the clients of other stylists.
I have become the resident hair loss specialist for multiple salons.

About the IAT
The International Association of Trichologists (IAT) is a non-profit corporation founded in California in 1974 to promote the study, research and legitimate practice in all aspects of the treatment and care of the human hair and scalp in health and disease.
The trichology course was developed at the University of Southern California during 1974-75 under the guidance of trichologist David Salinger.
The course was designed as a home-study (correspondence) course and, additionally, five days of clinical training must be undertaken under the supervision of an IAT-approved trichologist.
Students can presently undertake clinical training in Australia, India, Brazil, the U.S.A., Canada, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates and the U.K. Online lectures are also included. The course has been translated into Portuguese and Spanish.

Requirements for the Successful Completion of the Course
- Students enrolling in the course must be at least 18 years of age.
- Two months are allowed for the completion of each section of the course. Hence, the student is expected to complete the entire written part of the course within two years. However, you go at your own speed and some students complete the course in under a year. At the end of most modules, competency is tested with a written test which is sent to the course administrator for assessment.
- Eight hundred and fifty hours of study will enable most students to complete the written part of the course. On top of this, five days of clinical training must be undertaken, either during or after the theoretical part of the course, under the supervision of a certified trichologist with at least one year of full-time clinical experience and authorised by IAT to supervise such training. Two of the days (16 hours) are completed online and the other three days are completed at an authorised trichology clinic. The cost of this training is not included in the cost of the course. The present cost is US$2000.00 for the five days. The cost of clinical training does not include any travel or accomodation costs. Clinical training can be undertaken in Australia, USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, The United Arab Emirates, UK, and Kenya.
- At the completion of all practical and theoretical work, a written examination will be administered under supervision. Certification will be awarded to those students reaching the required level of competency. Certified Trichologists can then join the International Association of Trichologists as members (cost is US$250 per year) and may use the letters “IAT” after their name and may use the “Certified Trichologist” logo.
- The student’s ability to exit and re-enter the course is not restricted by the structure of the course. Those students who complete units of competency can obtain a statement of academic record if requested.
- Employment openings for certified trichologists will be advertised in the IAT newsletter. Most trichologists work for themselves and it must be realised that it takes time to build up a successful practice.
Policies
Recognition of Prior Learning
Assessment of prior learning is available to all participants. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) acknowledges the skills and knowledge obtained through formal training (conducted by industry or recognised educational institutions), work experience, and life experience. The main focus is on the learning outcomes of these experiences, not the how, when or where the learning occurred. Only those participants who feel their knowledge will enable them to pass the final exam without undertaking the written course may request such an opportunity. In order to gain RPL, participants must submit a formal request in writing along with evidence of your qualifications, which may include certification, references from employers, references from clients and examples of your work. A fee of US$300.00 will be charged for this assessment.
If the request is approved, you will be allowed to take the final exam without enrolling in the written program. In such a case, an additional fee of US$300.00 will be charged. Prior to awarding certification, five days of clinical training must be completed under the supervision of a certified trichologist with at least one year of full-time clinical experience and authorised by IAT to supervise such training. The present cost is US$2000.00 for the five days. Certification will be awarded to those participants that demonstrated the required level of competency. Certified Trichologists can then join the International Association of Trichologists as members (cost is US$250 per year) and may use the letters “IAT” after their name and may use the “Certified Trichologist” logo.
Articulation & Credit Transfer
Applications for credit or status for entry into the course will be determined on the basis of consideration of official transcripts of academic record from the appropriate college or institute.
Status granted through credit transfer is recorded on your Student Academic Record.
Privacy Policy
IAT is required to collect and store personal information in order to administer applications, enrolment and monitor academic progress. We will ensure that information collected is only used for the purpose for which it was collected.
Student Support Services and Complaints Mechanism
Students will be in constant contact with the course administrator, David Salinger, who will supervise training. Any questions, problems with the course or complaints should be addressed to Mr. Salinger at the International Association of Trichologists. Any complaint, appeal and its outcome will be recorded by IAT in writing. Each appeal will be heard by an independent person or panel, and each appellant will be given the opportunity to formally present his or her case. The appellant will be given a written statement of the appeal outcome, including reasons for the decision.
